From April 5 to 14 of this year, the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) of fourth-graders in schools in Uzbekistan is being conducted. For the first time, students of our country will take part in this study, along with more than 60 countries.

This study, conducted by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievements (IEA), assesses how well fourth-graders read and understand the text in countries with different educational systems and offers policy-relevant information for improving learning and teaching.

The study provides for the participation of 5,948 4th graders from 180 schools of the Republic, as well as their parents, school principals, and class leaders. Schools of varying demographics and locations are randomly selected so that the overall country sample is representative of the overall school population in Uzbekistan.

The basic PIRLS study is conducted in paper form, where 4th graders complete tasks that assess the level of understanding of the text, reading comprehension and student’s ability to acquire and use information while reading, as well as fill out a student’s questionnaire, which reflects his personal opinion about interest in the study, home, and school conditions.

Also, heads of participating schools and selected class leaders fill out a questionnaire of the school and teacher studying the educational environment in the educational institution, and parents or guardians of students — a home questionnaire studying the conditions of their children’s education.

All materials (assessment notebooks and questionnaires) have been prepared in Uzbek, Russian, and Karakalpak and verified through international verification by the National Centre for International Studies on State Inspectorate for Supervision of Quality in Education.

It should be noted that the fourth of the five important initiatives put forward by the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan is aimed at systematically organizing work to improve the spirituality of young people and widely promoting book reading.
